Georgia Whallops Louisiana-LaFayette 55-7 / Tech Dominates South Carolina State 41-10

09/04/2010

uga.jpgATHENS, Ga. (AP) - Aaron Murray loves to flash his athleticism. Georgia coach Mark Richt just wants his quarterback to stay healthy.

Murray passed for three touchdowns and ran for another in leading No. 23 Georgia to a 55-7 victory over Louisiana-Lafayette on Saturday.

Despite the absence of top receiver A.J. Green, Murray completed 16 of 24 passes for 194 yards in his first college game. Kris Durham caught two TD passes.

Murray ran four times for 41 yards. On a 16-yard scramble down the right sideline near the end of the first half, he reached out to hold the ball inside the front pylon for a 31-7 halftime lead.

The Bulldogs had 8 seconds left when Murray took the snap and saw his receivers covered. Instead of throwing the ball away and giving Georgia a chance for almost certain points with a short field goal, he decided to aim for the goal line.

''I need to work on making decisions,'' Murray said, ''that will always get us points at the end of the half.''

Georgia (1-0) visits South Carolina next week.

Louisiana-Lafayette (0-1) scored on Chris Masson's 60-yard pass to Ladarius Green late in the second quarter.

Green, a junior All-Southeastern Conference first-team selection last year, watched the game from the sidelines as Georgia awaits an NCAA ruling to clarify his playing status.

The Bulldogs did not announce that Green would miss the game until a few hours before kickoff. The NCAA is investigating if he was one of several players from different schools to attend a party hosted by a sports agent in Miami. Green said he has never been to Miami.

Starting tailback Washaun Ealey, one of nine Georgia players arrested this year, missed the game, too. Richt held him out following police charges of hit and run and driving with a suspended license last week.

Richt indicated after the game that Ealey will play at South Carolina, but the coach declined to comment on Green.

Carlton Thomas rushed 12 times for 61 yards. Caleb King's 20-yard run made it 7-0 late in the first quarter.

Blair Walsh kicked two field goals. His 52-yarder early in the second quarter gave the Bulldogs a 17-0 lead.

Georgia unveiled its 3-4 setup under new defensive coordinator Todd Grantham and had three sacks for minus-18 yards and nine tackles for minus-26 yards.

Louisiana-Lafayette finished with 14 yards rushing on 29 attempts.

gt.gifATLANTA (AP) - Joshua Nesbitt made it easy to forget about the offensive stars Georgia Tech lost to the NFL.

Nesbitt ran for 130 yards and three touchdowns, Roddy Jones added two scoring runs and No. 16 Georgia Tech beat South Carolina State 41-10 on Saturday.

The Yellow Jackets lost some big names from last year's Atlantic Coast Conference championship team. Demaryius Thomas, the leading receiver, was a first-round pick by Denver. Top rusher Jonathan Dwyer was a sixth-round pick by the Pittsburgh Steelers. Dwyer returned to watch Saturday's game from the sideline.

But the most important player in Georgia Tech's triple-option is Nesbitt and he kept the offense moving, despite an inability to establish a passing game. Nesbitt was only 1 for 6 for 8 yards with an interception, but he averaged 8.1 yards on his 16 carries.

Jones had touchdown runs of 1 and 15 yards. Tevin Washington, who replaced Nesbitt late in the third quarter, added an 11-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter as Georgia Tech had 372 yards rushing with six touchdowns.

South Carolina State's Asheton Jordan ran 125 yards on 17 carries and set up the Bulldogs' only touchdown with a 55-yard run to the Georgia Tech 3 in the third quarter. Quarterback Malcolm Long then scored from a yard out.

Georgia Tech gave up only one touchdown in its first game with new defensive coordinator Al Groh's 3-4 scheme.

Georgia Tech led 20-3 at halftime and pulled away with two quick touchdowns after the break.

Georgia Tech starting left guard Will Jackson left the game with a left knee injury late in the first quarter. He did not return. Johnson said he does not believe the injury is serious.

The White County Warriors lost a close game against the Gainesville Red Elephants, 31-22.

Going into the half, White County trailed 25-14.  The Warriors then scored a touchdown late in the 4th quarter to cut the Gainesville lead to 3 with around 5 minutes left.

Gainesville's Coach Miller then pulled out his ace in the hole with the wild-cat formation.  White County was unable to stop the unique line-up, as Gainesville drove all the way down the field to put the game out of reach for good.  Gainesville then held on to the lead for the final score of 31-22.

Bulldogs Ready for Ragin' Cajuns

09/04/2010

The Bulldogs are gearing up for the Louisiana-LaFayette Ragin' Cajuns as they start their 2010-2011 campaign.  The weather is picture-perfect and the Bulldogs will continue their streak of consecutive sellouts.

Georgia has won 12 of its last 13 season openers, including an 8-1 mark under Mark Richt.  They enter the season ranked No. 23 in the AP Poll.  Georgia has not lost a home opener since falling to Southern Miss 11-7 in 1996.  However, Georgia will be without the services of several key players.  The most prominent absence will be that of A.J. Green, who will miss today's game pursuant to policy and pending a ruling from the NCAA clarifying his status.

Under Richt since 2001, the Bulldogs have averaged 37.8 points in their season openers.  The Bulldogs all-time record for season openers is 88-25-3, in this the 177th season.

Georgia owns a 38-4 record against teams from outside the SEC under Coach Richt.  They are 25-1 against non-conference opponents at home.

The Cajuns will face Georgia for the first time in school history.

Braves Fall to Marlins 6-1

09/04/2010

MIAMI (AP) - Whenever Florida left fielder Logan Morrison hits the ball hard toward a gap, he starts thinking about turning it into a triple.

There's typically just one flaw in that plan.

''I'm not the fleetest of foot,'' Morrison said.

The Braves might argue that one. Morrison hit two stand-up RBI triples, Andrew Miller battled through five innings for his first win in more than a year, and the Marlins beat Atlanta 6-1 on Friday night.

Atlanta's loss, combined with Philadelphia's 1-0 win over Milwaukee, cut the Braves' NL East lead over the Phillies to one game.

The Braves have been alone in first every day since beating Philadelphia on May 31, when they held a half-game lead that eventually ballooned to as much as seven games.

By Saturday night, they may have company.

Roy Halladay will try for his 17th win in Philadelphia against the Brewers - while Atlanta faces Marlins' ace Josh Johnson, who has an 0.75 ERA in two starts against the Braves this season.

The Marlins were without manager Edwin Rodriguez, who served a one-game suspension handed down earlier Friday after baseball completed its review of incidents that took place in Florida's game against Washington on Wednesday night.

Florida pitcher Chris Volstad was suspended for six games, pitcher Alex Sanabia for five, first baseman Gaby Sanchez for three. All three Marlins are appealing, and Sanchez drew loud ovations each time he appeared at the plate after clothes-lining Washington's Nyjer Morgan during the melee.

Georgia State Clobbers Shorter in Season Opener

09/02/2010

GSU_athletic_primarymark_1_CMYK__325_x_333_.jpg.jpgThe Georgia State Panthers had their way with Shorter during their inaugural game on Thursday night at the Georgia Dome, winning convincingly by a score of 41-7.

The Panthers scored first, early and often.  The team especially seemed to start becoming more cohesive as the game continued on.  The defense was very stingy for the Panthers, holding the Eagles to only 7 points.  Also, Coach Billy Curry stated that he "was pleased" with the play of the special teams.

Throughout the football family at Georgia State, they are emphasizing "Faith - Family - Football."  This was reiterated by Coach Curry after the game.  Coach also commented that "it feels good to win...we're very grateful for this!...There is a lot of potential - a lot of weapons here."

The Panthers move to 1-0 on the season, while the Eagles fall to 0-2.  The Panthers continue their inaugural season next Saturday, September 11th as they host Lambuth at the Georgia Dome.
